The Swan Nebula (AKA the Lobster or Horseshoe Nebula) (M17/NGC6618) is a very bright gas cloud containing dust and molecular gases which is reckoned to be one of the largest star forming regions in the galaxy. It is 5-6,000 light years away from Earth and is probably 15-20 light years across. It is located in the northern part of the constellation Sagittarius and is so bright it can be seen with binoculars.
