The Bank of England Museum (2): The History 1790-1950

Sir John Soane was appointed in 1828 to undertake an expansion of facilities on the site at Threadneedle St to cope with the increasing workload and responsibility of the Bank.

After the completion of this expansion a single story building covered most of the current site.

However only a century later continued expansion led the governors to appoint Herbert Baker to make radical changes to Soanes Bank. This involved demolishing much of the 19th-century single storey building and replacing it with a multi-story building – much as we see today.
