Built around 1480 as part of the reordering of the Great Hall, the façade of the Tower facing the courtyard has a spectacular display of heraldic sculpture.
The lowest figure is the Percy Lion, which also figures prominently on other Percy family houses such as Alnwick castle. Above this are seen the Percy coat of arms alongside those of the Lucy family, from whom the Percys had inherited the estates in 1380.
I am semi-retired after a career in medical sciences. I now work from home doing independent research and consultancy amongst other things. One advantage of this is that I do have time to indulge my interests including birdwatching, natural history, steam trains and history particularly ancient history.
