Making the most of my changed itinerary last week, I also managed to fit the first of a new survey. This is for the British Dragonfly Society. This involves surveying the major water bodies in a map tetrad over the summer looking for the presence, or absence, of Dragonflies. There are two major bodies of water in my local tetrad, the Tarn and the nearby dragonfly pool and the moat at Eltham Palace, which I have not visited for a few years but I know used to be quite good for dragonflies.

Starting at Eltham Palace I walked along the side of the moat and drew a complete blank. Not a single dragonfly to be seen. I hope this is not a portent for the season and that something has happened to kill off the dragonfly population.
Moving onto the tarn, there was the same species as I had seen early in the week on my usual walk, Large Red and Azure damselflies and Broad Bodied Chaser.

Will resurvey both sites in about 4 weeks to see if there are any changes.
