The Gatekeeper is a member of the ‘Brown’ butterflies. It is usually found along hedgerows and field edges which gives it an alternative name of Hedge Brown. It is vary variable in colour patterning and a number of well described variants have been described. It is common in Southern and Central Britain and its range is spreading northwards. It is on the wing from July through to mid-September.
