Barnacle Geese are winter visitors to the UK.The name comes from the belief, before we understood that birds migrate, that during the summer these birds became barnacles which attached themselves to rocks and from which the birds emerged again in the autumn. We now know, of course, that the birds migrate north to breed during our summer and return here to overwinter. One of the best areas in the UK to see Barnacle Geese is on the Solway Firth between England and Scotland on the West Coast.
