Yesterday I went to Rochester to meet Keith and we visited an exhibition called Gaia in the Cathedral. Gaia is a scale model of the Earth (1cm=18km). It hangs in the middle of the Cathedral nave. My first impression was just how much of the world is water, something I think I had never really appreciated from maps or small globes. Astronauts when they first saw the Earth from space described a feeling of awe, something that became known as the Overview effect and looking at this installation I can see what they mean.

This installation by Luke Jerram is touring the country and is in Rochester for another week and after that can be seen in Cork, Oxford, Lancaster, Hartlepool, Jodrell Bank and Chelmsford as well as locations in the USA, Norway, Australia and Sweden this year.
