A piece of Japan in Cheshire

Whilst Sue and I were in Cheshire we visited Tatton Park near Knutsford. This is two historic houses in lovely parkland, but our reason for visiting was to see the Japanese Garden, reckoned to be the best in the UK.

The garden was created in 1910 by Alan de Tatton Egerton after he had seen a Japanese garden at the Japanese-British Exhibition in London. he enlisted a team of gardeners from japan to ensure that it was true to Japanese principles and authentic. It was restored in 1997-2000 under the guidance of Professor Masao Fukuhara. It is unique in the UK as other ‘Japanese gardens’ within stately homes incorporated elements of western interpretation into them.
