Butterflies galore in between the rain.

On Monday I visited the RSPB reserve at Broadwater Warren with Nicole and Andrew. I have not visited this reserve which is just south of Tunbridge Wells before and so was excited to see what was there.

The weather was mixed with periods of heavy rain interspersed by periods of sun. During the rain, all was quiet, but as soon as the sun came out, butterflies were everywhere. In total, we saw 12 species, the highlights of which were 20+ silver-washed Fritillaries and 2 White Admirals. Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers were far too numerous to count, although numbers may have been in the hundreds. We also recorded 5 species of Dragonfly, although sadly not the Golden-ringed dragonfly which is one of the specialities of the site.

The reserve is also home to some interesting birds including summer visitors such as Woodlark, Spotted Flycatcher and Tree Pipit but we did not see them, or hear them, on this visit and the bird highlight was a brief view of a buzzard disappearing through the trees.

A good morning, especially given the variable weather. Thanks to Andrew and Nicole for taking me to this wonderful reserve, which I will definitely plan to visit again.
