Visit to Hutchinson’s Bank

We made our final visit of the summer to Hutchinsons Bank last Friday as the Butterfly season draws to a close. As we entered the cutting we saw a female Brown Hairstreak, but it did not stop to settle and shortly afterwards we saw a second female but again it was very active and flew out of site.

Also in the cutting were a number of Chalkhill Blue Butterflies

After we left the cutting there were lots of Gatekeepers, Common Blue, Whites and Meadow Brown Butterflies, together with Speckled Wood and Small Heath.

Other insects seen included Western Honey Bee, Common Carder Bee, Common Drone Fly, Marmalade Hoverfly, Long Hoverfly and a Migrant Hawker dragonfly.

This brings my total of Butterfly species recorded at Hutchinsons Bank this year to 21 (out of the 50 or so species found in the UK). So it’s been a good year and with a bit of planning next year, I can probably get close to the 30 or so that are recorded on the site most years.
