In search of Silver-Spotted Skipper

As the butterfly season comes to a close, I was looking at what species I hadn’t seen so far and so targeted a visit to see if I could find Silver-spotted Skipper. This is a rare species in Kent, occurring in only two places, at Queendown Warren, near Gillingham and Temple Ewell near Dover. It was to this latter site that I made a trip down from London.

By the time I arrived it was a warm but overcast day and not looking very promising for butterflies, but I was determined to give it a go. I proved right and there were few butterflies and I only recorded sparse numbers of 4 species: Speckled Wood, Meadow Brown, Holly Blue and Large White, but no Silver-spotted Skipper.

I did find some interesting other invertebrates on the site however
