34027 ‘Taw Valley

Taw Valley leaving Horsted Keynes Station

This wonderful-looking locomotive was built in 1946 at Brighton Works for use on Southern Region mainline trains. In all, 110 Light Pacifics were built by the Southern, which were divided into 2 classes, West of England and Battle of Britain. Although similar there are some differences between the two versions.

The class was rebuilt in 1957 and 34027 was one of the earliest to undergo this process at Eastleigh Works, Southampton. Following the rebuild 34027 was assigned to commuter services on the Southeastern sector. It was withdrawn from service in 1964 and sat in Barry Scrapyard for 16 years till it was removed in 1980 and taken to the Severn Valley Railway, where it was restored over the next 7 years. It has worked on that line and on mainline excursions since.
