A walk by the river

Last week Keith and I met up in Gravesend for a walk along the River Thames. It was quite quiet initially with just Black-headed Gulls and Herring Gulls mixed with a couple of Common Gulls. From the Promenade we picked out 2 Mediterranean Gulls resting on the mud amongst the Black-headed Gulls.

Distantly downriver we could make out a Curlew, an Oystercatcher and an Avocet, but this was the sum total of the waders for our walk.

We turned from the river to walk around Gordon Lake and saw a Sparrowhawk flying towards the Fort. On the lake, there were a good number of Moorhens, a pair of Egyptian Geese and a pair of Mute Swans.

We also visited the ravine below the fort but it was very quiet although we did find a Chiffchaff, which was already beginning to sing.

Returning to the promenade, we relocated the Meditteranean Gulls amongst the flock of Gulls which had come nearer as someone was feeding them.

The Med Gulls seemed unsure of this unexpected bonus and hung around the edges of the feeding pack, but this did give us the opportunity for some more photos before we returned to the station.
