Northern Lapwing

DSCN0070

The Northern Lapwing, sometimes known as the Peewit because of its call is one of our most familiar and easily recognised wading birds, Its black and white markings make it a distinctive bird on the ground or in flight.

However, it has undergone a significant decline in recent years and has now been included as a red list species, marking it as a species of conservation concern. This may partially be due to the loss of breeding habitat and the decline in insects on which it feeds.

It can be seen all year round, although in SW England, West Wales and Southern Eire it is more common as a winter visitor. The current estimated breeding pairs is around 90,000. Winter visitors swell this number to around 600,000.
