Battersea Park in May

Bank Holiday Monday morning walk in Battersea Park.

My route took me around the lake and it was noticeable how many fewer waterbirds there were than when I visited back in the winter. However the Mandarin Duck are still here and I find a female with 2 chicks feeding in the shelter of an island vegetation. I later found two males, already well into eclipse plumage and 1 male still resplendent in full breeding plumage.

Moving on I can hear Cetti’s Warbler in the reeds, their vibrant, loud song ringing out. I also find a single Gadwall and a small group of Common Pochard. Two young Grey Herons rest on an island, no doubt two of this seasons offspring.

During my walk I came across a number of Coot nests most of which had young chicks.

It was rather a cool day despite the sun shining and so not much insect activity although I did find these two Buff-tailed Bumblebee enjoying the Regosa Roses.
