The smallest of our native Grebes, it is found on many lakes and larger water bodies. it dives readily and will often travel large distances under water. It is estimated that there are 3650-7300 breeding pairs in the UK and up to 15,000 wintering individuals. Despite this numbers it can be difficult to see as it often sticks to the reedy margins of lakes.
