Great Crested Grebe

The largest of our native grebes, it is a common sight on inland water. Easily identified by its orange and black collar, it was once hunted for its “exotic” feathers. It is estimated that there are around 5000 breeding pairs in the UK with around 15000 birds here during winter. It is found in most lowland areas on inland bodies of water, but can also be seen on the sea.
