George O’Dowd was born in 1961 in Barnehurst Kent and grew up in Eltham until he left to pursue his musical career. Eventually, after a couple of bands, he helped form Culture Club who went onto produce a number of hit singles and albums. They disbanded in 1986 but had a brief reunions in 1988 and 2011.
On the split up of Culture Club he pursued a solo career, his career embracing many different avenues. He produced his first solo album in 1987 and a UK No 1 single. In the 1990s and he continued to produce albums on his own label ‘More Protein’ sometimes writing or performing under a pseudonym. He presented a weekly chat show on Power Station from 1990-91. In 2001 he published a cook book and in 2003 he appeared in the stage musical ‘Taboo’ and hosted a show on the LBC radio station. He continued to release his music along with appearing as a DJ and in 2016 he became a mentor on the TV series The Voice in the UK and in Australia. In 2022 he appeared in I’m a celebrity..get me out of here finishing 8th.
