The Northern Pintail is one of my favourite ducks. The population in the UK is stable, unlike many parts of Europe where shooting is causing concern about dropping numbers. The UK is a major wintering site for Pintail with an estimated 20,000 birds present. It is thought that most of these birds come from the Icelandic breeding population. A small number of pairs (<50) stay in the summer to breed.
