Naturelog: Thursday 12th December

In the mid-afternoon went to Wetland centre at Barn Elms for a couple of hours in the hope of a Bittern. There have been up to 6 recorded on the reserve recently. I understand that a good time to see them is at dusk when they fly to the main reed bed to roost. Unfortunately didn’t see one – looks like its going to be a bittern-less year. I did see a pair of Pintail which was a first for the year! Was surprised to find that I had seen 33 species in a couple of hours which I thought was a good return.

It was the first time I had watched through dusk to almost darkness at the reserve (something which you can only do mid-winter) and with perhaps only a few people on the reserve it was interesting to see and listen to the reserve in the fading dusk light.
