The Wood Duck is a relative of the Mandarin, but comes from the USA. Like the Mandarin it was introduced in wildfowl collections from which it escaped. It is not nearly as numerous as Mandarin Duck and I couldn’t find any figures for the estimated UK population. There were 3 males in my area at the end of 2012/ early 2013 but haven’t seen one recently.
These photos are all of a male who visited the Tarn at the end of 2012 and stayed for a number of weeks.
