On Tower Hill, close by the Tower of London, stands the Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial to sailors from the Merchant fleet who died during the two world wars and have ‘no grave but the sea’. The original memorial was designed by Edwin Lutyens and was extended following the second world war. It was originally unveiled by Queen Mary in December 1928

In all it records the names of 36,000 British seaman and 50 Australian Seamen. Not all those from the British Merchant fleet who died and have no grave are remembered here as there are other Merchant fleet memorials around the country.

Adjacent to the memorial for the world wars is a memorial to those of the Merchant Fleet who lost their lives during the Falklands war. Designed by Gordon Newton it was dedicated in September 2005.
