The Paternoster statue was erected in Paternoster Sq, adjacent to St Paul’s Cathedral, following its redevelopment in the 1970s. It is by Elizabeth Frink and is said to have a double theme. Firstly it recalls the history of the Paternoster area where the city livestock market was held until the market was transferred to Smithfield. Secondly, standing in the shadow of St Paul’s it is a reminder of the opening line of Psalm 23 ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’. When Paternoster Sq was redeveloped in the 1990s the statue was moved to its present position and housed on a new plinth.
