Early July sees the emergence of the Small Red-eyed damselfly. From my local recording some years ago I knew of one local site for them: the moat at Eltham Palace. So I was delighted to find that they were still going strong this year



In early June, I found 3 damselflies on the lilies on the moat.




The diagnostic difference is that little black x mark on the final segment. In the red-eyed damselfly, this is all blue.
By the following month’s count, there were 10. It is not a huge number but it is an indication that this isolated colony is still doing well.
