Statues and Monuments: Royal Oak

The old oak tree, now fallen, is reputed to have been planted in Greenwich Park in the 12th century. It became famous during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century, when the queen is said to have picnicked beside it, although some versions of the story say that by then it already had a hollow trunk and that she picnicked inside the tree. It eventually died in the 19th century but remained standing until it was felled by a storm in 1991.

The tree to the left was planted in 1992 by Prince Phillip as part of the celebrations of the Ruby (40 year) jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
