As well as being an excellent nature reserve, Tout Quarry on the Island of Portland is also home to a Sculpture Park. The quarry was once one of over a hundred stone quarries on the Island. It ceased working in 1982 with the last contract being for 30,000 tons of stone for a sea defence project. In 1983 Portland Sculpture and Quarry Trust took over management and began to create the sculpture park using the stone that had been left from commercial operations. Famous sculptors such as Anthony Gormley were asked to contribute and today there are over 60 sculptures in the park.
Tout means Lookout and the views from the Park back over Chesil Bank to the mainland are amazing. Nearby are Weymouth’s Olympic Rings, installed at the time of the 2012 Olympic Games, when Portland Bay was the venue for sailing and other water sports competitions.
