The Dorchester brewery dates back to 1837 when Charles Eldridge bought the small Green Dragon brewery. The Eldridge family continued to be involved in the brewery, first in partnership with Samuel Mason and later Edwin Pope. Eventually the Pope family bought out the Eldridge share.
In1879 the Brewery bought a new site adjacent to the railway and built a new brewery which was completed in 1880 and opened the following year. The company continued the production of beer here until 2003, when faced with severe financial difficulties it was forced to close.
The site lay abandoned for a number of years until planning permission was granted for the development of a complex of hotels and restaurants. However the some of the original Brewery buildings were incorporated into the development that is known as Brewery Square.
