Birdlog: Patch Update March 2013

The Tarn, Mottingham
The Tarn, Mottingham

33 species of bird seen on my patch this month with 5 new species which took the yearly running total to 39

The number one sighting was the appearance of a Lesser Black-backed Gull over the garden on two occasions during the month. I had seen one in the centre of Eltham the day before so presumably this was the same bird. This was a first sighting for me on the patch in 13 years of watching here. The other good bird was a female Blackcap which put in a brief appearance in the garden. I have tried to relocate it in the area where they are most commonly seen around the Tarn but it seems to have moved on.

The weather remains unusually cold. I understand that this was the coldest Easter on record for the UK. I wonder what effect this will have for bird migration and for the emergence of butterflies and dragonflies and the subsequent success of their breeding seasons. I guess we will begin to get the answer to the first question in the next month
