Bird pictures: Starling

One of our commonest birds, although wintering numbers seem to be declining and the sight of swirling winter flocks seems less common at least in my part of the country. These murmurations were common in London when I was younger

One of my favourite Starling stories concerns a town where the starlings roosted under the railway bridge. the town council spent lots of money trying to find ways of preventing or dissuading the starlings from roosting there and then suddenly over a period of months the roost disappeared completely. The town rejoiced and six weeks later the bridge fell down!

A beautiful sunny day and so after working all morning decided to go to Greenwich Park to see if the Cuckoo and Ring Ouzel sighted earlier that morning were still present. The park was very busy and there was no sign of either bird in the original locations, so I decided to walk down the less popular side of the park thinking that if the birds had moved on from their previous locations they may have gone to quieter areas but unfortunately no sign. A hot sunny afternoon is not the best time for birdwatching but many of the resident birds were still seen. But all in all a very pleasant afternoon walk. One surprising aspect was that despite a few days of very good weather I still only saw 2 Small White butterflies in the park.

On the way home I stopped at the Tarn to check if the Little Grebe was still present. I could not locate it at the spot where I had seen it yesterday but on the way back found it again at the western end of the lake. I walked that way hoping to get some better photos but it moved back out into the middle.
