Bad roads apparently
I was interested to read in this mornings Times that an county official in Kent has blamed the Romans for the current state of the roads in parts of the county. According to the report he told a meeting of a transportation committee that many of the counties roads were built by the Romans and that these roads were more likely to move than those of more modern constructions and were incompatible with the asphalt surfacing used which cracked because it could not cope with the movement!
Some people have suggested that blaming the Romans is a smoke-screen for diverting attention from the question as to why the County council used a asphalt that was not suitable for the job. A councillor pointed out that as far he were aware the road is question was not built on the remains of a Roman road.
