Naturelog: Patch update: February 2014

It is nice to have emerged the month in somewhat calmer weather than we entered it. The damage from the storms is evident around the patch and it remains to be seen what the long-term effect of this is. There were 34 species of bird seen on the patch this month including 6 new ticks for the year, bringing the total to 37 for 2014.

One of the things I like doing is comparing year on year to see how they compare in terms of species I have seen. Obviously since I am spending more time around the patch in the last 18 months the totals have gone up, so this is the first year that I can really get a comparison. So far January was 1 species down and February is 3 species up on 2013.

The patch highlight of the month was a second fly-over record of Little Egret. These small white herons are becoming well established in Southern England and having once been a rarity are now common on many estuaries and lakes with breeding taking place within many established Heron colonies.

DSC00190 Little Egret seen at Sutcliffe Park in Eltham last year.

The winter thrushes disappeared early in the month as did the female Blackcap which had been around the garden most of the winter.
