The largest of the UK Grebes, this species was almost hunted to extinction in the Uk as a source of elegant and colourful feathers for the millinery trade. There are now an estimated 5, 500 breeding pairs with a winter population reaching 23,000 birds,
I am semi-retired after a career in medical sciences. I now work from home doing independent research and consultancy amongst other things.
