The last month seems to have been rather quite. Our Blue Tits have fledged a brood and have moved away – only one of our two boxes seems to have been used this year. We have even managed a few sunny days but generally the weather has been cool and wet and this has been reflected in butterfly sightings on the patch which have been disappointing both in terms of frequency and numbers.. There were 25 species of bird seen on the patch this month including 2 new ticks for the year (Common Swift and Long-tailed Tit). This brings the total to 43 for 2014.

The patch highlight of the month was the arrival of 2 Common swifts over the garden last Thursday. They circled for some time and then flew off towards the golf course. This species used to nest in the area but has been sporadic over recent years although a group did spend some time in the area last spring/summer. I haven’t seen them since Thursday but weather hasn’t been great for aerial feeders so I keep my fingers crossed that they will return.
