Northe point lies at the southern end of Weymouth Harbour with extensive views north over Weymouth Bay and south over Portland Bay.


It has a long history of being used as a defensive position and as early as 1543 there are records of guns being sited on the point to guard the entrance to Weymouth Harbour. Other records show that this continued during the English Civil war and in the 18th century it was recorded that there were 14 cannons sited on the point. It is likely that these were housed in turf enclosures.
In 1860 the Royal Engineers began to construct a permanant stone gun-fortress on the site and this was finally commissioned in 1872
