The Paternoster statue was erected in Paternoster Sq, adjacent to St Paul’s Cathedral, following its redevelopment in the 1970s. It is by Elizabeth Frink and is said to have a double theme. Firstly it recalls the history of the Paternoster area where the city livestock market was held until the market was transferred to Smithfield. Secondly, standing in the shadow of St Paul’s it is a reminder of the opening line of Psalm 23 ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’. When Paternoster Sq was redeveloped in the 1990s the statue was moved to its present position and housed on a new plinth.
Statues and Memorials in London: Paternoster

I’ve seen this statue before but never realised the meaning behind it.
Hi Becky
One of the reasons I started looking at and recording the statues and memorials was because I did not know who many of these people were or what they commemorate. I was also unaware of the meaning of the Paternoster statue, although I remember wondering what relevance a shepherd with sheep had to central London.
