A Newcomer to the Tarn

One of the good things about watching a site regularly is to see new visitors, particularly those you haven’t seen before. In past years on the Tarn we have had Little Grebe and Gadwall as new winter visitors, but in the past couple of weeks we have had a male Eurasian Teal join the usual group of Mallard and Tufted Ducks.

One of the most interesting things has been to see how its behaviour has changed over the weeks since it arrived. Initially it kept well out in the middle of the lake, then it started coming into feed with the others when people provided food on the water and this week it was feeding on the banks. I imagine that with time it has become bolder as it has seen the others ducks take advantage of the food provided by visitors.
