The UK government, through DEFRA, are currently looking at the prospect of banning peat from gardening products to protect our peatlands, which are an endangered habitat. In the consultations, there are a number of options ranging from an outright ban to surcharging the bags in which peat is sold. There is also a section on potential exemptions to the ban.

It is important that the wildlife community make a strong response in joining the RSPB and other conservation organisations is arguing for a strong ban. This is a habitat that is rapidly vanishing from our country and we need to do everything to protect that which remains. We can each submit our views to DEFRA and the consultation can be easily accessed through the RSPB website at https://community.rspb.org.uk/ourwork/b/rspb-england/posts/for-peat-s-sake-bring-in-a-ban
