Last week Keith and I went for a walk along the River Thames at Gravesend. Starting at Town Pier, walking east, the mud was initially populated by a variety of Gulls. These included Black-headed Gulls, Herring Gulls and Common Gulls. 2 Cormorants were on the pier, but there was no sign of the group of Turnstones that often are found here.

There were clear signs that autumn was upon us.

When we reached the Promenade, there were lots of wading birds feeding on the mud including Dunlin, Turnstones, Redshank, Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit, a single Grey Plover and a Little Egret.

We then turned inland to Gordon Gardens to check out the lake and the cutting. The former had a large number of Moorhen and Mallard (more than we have seen there before), some more gulls, a family of Mute Swans and a rather angry Egyptian Goose which seemed to spend most of its time chasing the Ducks. The Cutting was flooded which meant we were only able to check a small part of it but we did add a few species.

It was then time to adjourn for some lunch and so we retraced our steps along the promenade to Town Pier, adding a Greater Black-backed Gull to the gull species feeding on the mud. A pretty good morning’s walk.
What a marvellous walk and bird sightings! Thank you for sharing!
