Having received some information from Andrew about a Firecrest he had found in a location close to me, I set off to explore Gravel Pit Lane in Eltham. Gravel Pit Lane is an old lane which today flanks the Eltham Warren Golf Course. The lane is marked on a map of 1801 when it was a lane through farmland. The OS map of 1898 shows the section of the golf course between today’s Eltham Park South and the Bexley Road was a gravel pit and on the opposite side of the lane was a sand pit (https://enthusiasticgardener.com/2022/01/23/gravel-pit-lane/).

I went along the path to the spot Andrew had indicated to me as the site he saw the Firecrest, but although I repeatedly detected it calling I was unable to find it in the thick undergrowth and trees.

Didn’t see the Firecrest in the time I was there, which is a shame as it is a very attractive bird.

What a beautiful bird.
My partner Kevin works at the BTO in Thetford has worked there 6 weeks now…it’s a beautiful place with a nature reserve around it
