Today we visited Pensthorpe, a nature reserve near Fakenham. It’s a mixture of a wildfowl collection and a wild area. Our first stop is the wader scrape. Unfortunately, the only waders present are a single Green Sandpiper and a pair of Ruff. Egyptian Geese, Canada Geese and Greylag Geese were all present but the highlight was 5 species of birds of Prey that we saw whilst we were in the hide. A Hobby flew over the hide, followed shortly afterward by a Common Kestrel. In the distance, we could see Buzzard and Marsh Harrier. Sue spotted a raptor sitting on a fence post which turned out to be a Sparrowhawk.

From here we made our way to the woodland hide where there was a flurry of activity on the feeder station. A Nuthatch and a pair of Marsh Tits were the highlight species amongst common woodland birds.

Our final stop was the lake where there was a large party of Tufted Duck.

Pensthorpe has a number of large lakes

Pensthorpe as well as having a wildfowl collection and a nature reserve has a large conservation centre involved in the preservation and re-introduction of endangered species. These include Turtle Doves, Corncrakes and Common Crane.

A warm sunny morning saw Keith and I at West Court Farm near Cliffe in Kent for our usual morning stop at Tabitha’s snack waggon before proceeding onto the nearby RSPB reserve. The farm fields were very dry and there were not many birds to see although we did see a passing Marsh Harrier and a Mute Swan.

Moving onto the reserve we quickly located two spoonbills feeding on one of the pools.

Generally, though bird numbers were low and it was the butterflies and Dragonflies that held our attention.

And this strange looking bird – which is actually a juvenile Robin

Despite the apparent quietness we still recorded 50 species of birds, which is not bad for this time of the year here along with 9 species of Butterflies and 5 species of Dragonfly.

Went down to the Medway estuary in North Kent to spend a day bird-watching with my friend Keith. The weather forecast was not brilliant but as we started it was a bright if blowy morning. Our first stop was the Riverside Country Park in Gillingham, which is on the southside of the estuary. This walk overlooks a number of marshes and has two prominentaries (Horrid Hill and Motney Hill) which stick out into the estuary.

We were suprised at the number of Brent Geese that were still here. This winter visitor has normally flown north to its breeding grounds by now. Also present were Shelduck, Oystercatcher and a single Curlew. At Horrid Hill we flushed a Cuckoo which had been resting on the shoreline. Near Motney Hill we heard and then briefly saw a Lesser Whitethroat and I saw my first Swifts of the year.

There were a good numbers of Butterflies present including Peacock, Red Admiral, Green-viewed White, Small white and Orange Tip.

In the late afternoon, we moved over to the Northern side of the estuary to Abbotts Court at Hoo. The weather had improved throughout the day and now it was quite warm if you were out of the strong wind. Abbotts Court is an area of wet meadow and fields situated behind the river bank.

DSCN2427a

A number of Yellow wagtails were flying around but we didnt manage to find one on the ground. A Little egret flew from the meadow towards the river and a Meditteranian Gull flew overhead. A second Cuckoo was seen and heard and a second Lesser Whitethroat was located in the undergrowth. 2 Northern Wheatears were on the meadows and gave good if distant views. More Brent Geese were on the mudflats.
