Birdlog: Sunday 7th April

Another lovely sunny day and lots of activity in the garden. Today seem mostly characterised by flying visits. Mid-afternoon a Grey Heron flew over low – on its way into the Tarn and shortly afterwards I had a good but distant view of Eurasian Sparrowhawk (prob Female) circling above the Grounds of Eltham Palace. It just seemed as though she was enjoying the thermals as she drifted almost effortless across the sky getting higher and higher. Later in the afternoon we saw both Mallard and Canada Geese fly over as they made there way off the Tarn presumably on their way to a roosting site. Also flying around mid-afternoon were the party of Western Jackdaws calling loudly – so distinctive compared to their bigger cousins the Carrion Crows. It would seem that they have taken up residence locally and are now a regular sighting.
