Northe Fort (2)

The fortress was commisioned in 1872. The guns were housed in casements in the fortress wall protected by steel and timber doors when not in use. This was aimed at giving the gund the maximum arc of fire whilst affording them the maximum protection.

The armament of the fort consisted of 12 muzzle loaded guns

The individual casements were connected by corridors

However the system was soon abandoned and in 1903 the casements were enclosed and the guns resited to the ramparts of the fort
