Railway Stamps

The new stamps released to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton to Darlington Railway.

Featured locomotives:

  • Locomotion No. 1 – Stevenson locomotive, built 1825, the first steam locomotive to pull a passenger train on the Stockton and Darlington Railway
  • Rocket – built 1829 Stevenson locomotive that won the Rainhill Trials
  • City of Truro – a Great Western railway locomotive built in 1903. Some records suggest that it was the first steam locomotive to travel over 100mph
  • Mallard – LNER locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Greasley. In 1938 it broke the record for steam train speed at 126mph, a record that still stands today
  • Duchess of Hamilton – LMS locomotive built in 1938
  • Evening Star – a BR standard class engine, the last steam engine to be built by BR in1960.
