A winters day and a chance for some birdwatching in Kent with Keith. Our first stop was a housing estate in Strood, which is now becoming a regular spot for a wintering flock of Bohemian Waxwings, a Scandinavian bird which only comes to the UK in years when the berry crop on the continent is not enough to sustain them. Some years there are huge eruptions with many hundreds or even thousands of birds coming over the North Sea. This is not one on them and this winter there has only been a handful in the South of England, so we wanted to take the opportunity to see if we could catch up with them. We had to wait over an hour, but eventually, the group of 6 birds dropped into their favourite feeding tree and stayed for about 20 minutes before flying off.

After a break in a local cafe for lunch, we made our way down to the River Medway at Rochester looking for Common Sandpiper, a species which winters on this stretch of river. As the mud was exposed on the falling tide there were Northern Lapwing, Oystercatcher and Common Redshank feeding on the mud together with Mallard and a single Little Grebe.

Then out from one of the little creeks came a Common Sandpiper and we got close views as it began to feed.

As we walked along the riverside to the Railway station we saw a second Common Sandpiper. A good day with both target species seen well.

Waxwing

Waxwing

A good start to the morning with my first record of Grey Wagtail in the garden before I left to join Keith for a day in Rochester.

Our first stop though was on a housing estate on the outskirts of Strood, where a group of Waxwings has taken up residence attracted by the berry bushes. This attractive winter visitor is irruptive, that is the numbers in the UK depend on the success, or otherwise, of the winter-berry crop on the continent of Europe. The poorer the continental crop the more birds find their way to the UK in search of food. It took us about 10 minutes before the birds appeared and they then proceeded to visit various berry trees in the area around us, usually returning to a perching tree before going off to find more food.

After this we went into Rochester to visit the Cathedral and get some lunch before taking an afternoon walk along the River Medway, along what had been the dock quays but what is now and open space and a riverside path. The bird count was not high but we did find 3 Common Sandpipers, a few Common Redshank and Oystercatchers and a Stonechat.

A few days birdwatching with Keith in Dorset. On our arrival in Weymouth we dropped our luggage off at the accommodation and headed out to the RSPB at Radipole Lake, a nature reserve won the lower reaches of the River Wey as it enters the town.

Walking along the entrance path we are greeted by a chorus of Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler and Cetti’s Warbler all in song, although they all contrive to stay out of sight in the reed-beds. A distant Marsh Harrier was seen and 3 Common Sandpipers were located on an island in the river.

Returning back to the reserve centre a Greenshank and 2 Black-tailed Godwits were feeding on the mud exposed by the receding tide.
