Naturelog: Saturday 1st June

A rare day trip out of London to visit the RSPB reserve at Strumpshaw Fen in the Yare valley in Norfolk. The reserve is situated between Norwich and Great Yarmouth and whilst it is good for birds, it is probably most famous for its dragonflies (esp Norfolk hawker) and butterflies (esp Swallowtail). Fenland was once a major part of the landscape in East Anglia but much has been drained for agricultural purposes and today what is left is mainly in Nature Reserves.

The birding was good with excellent views of Marsh Harrier, Kingfisher and a brief flight view of Bittern being the highlights

The weather conspired against us though and it was cool and windy – not good conditions for butterflies or dragonflies. In fact it was so bad that I didn’t record a single example of either!
Despite this it was still a good day and taking into account birds seen in Norfolk and Suffolk I recorded 50 species.

Thanks to London Natural History Society for organising trip.
