This bronze statue of St George and the Dragon by Charles Hartwell was commissioned to commemorate the men and women of Marylebone who died in World war One. It stands on a roundabout not far from Lord’s Cricket ground.
The epitaph reads:
A grateful tribute
to the men and women of
Saint Mary-le-Bone
who by their
service and sacrifice
for King and Country
freely played their part
in the Great War
1914 – 1918
and in the Second World War
1939 -1945
It was often the case that sculptures would make more than one casting of a memorial and the second casting of Hartwell’s George and the Dragon is in Eldon Square Newcastle, where I recently photographed it. It was paid for by public subscription and unveiled by Earl Haig, the War time Army Commander, in 1923. In 1974 the council planned to move it from Eldon Square but were forced to abandon their plans due to the public outcry.
